Electric scooters are an excellent choice if you have a commute to get to work each day. Many municipalities allow you to share bike trails and lanes so long as you adhere to their bylaws. You can enjoy cruising to work in record time and by passing all of that horrid traffic you used to sit in!

The most essential part of your electric scooter is the battery. There are many types of electric scooter batteries available; however, you need to decide which one suits your needs the best before you purchase one. Most electric scooters will come standard with a battery, however, it is likely one of the cheapest electric scooter batteries available, and it may not last you for very long. Manufacturers do not make money if they add the best accessories to your scooter, they want to make it as affordable as possible to encourage consumers to purchase their electric scooters.

This is good news for you, because you can leave your gas guzzling car at home in the garage and use it on weekends to do your shopping. Electric scooters can save you a lot of money. You won’t have to purchase insurance, gas or do much repair work. The only thing you should seriously consider is a top quality after market battery.

Electric scooter batteries come in several types. Once you have educated yourself about the types and their pros and cons, you will be better able to decide which of these batteries works best for your specific needs.

Most electric scooters come standard with a sealed lead acid (SLA) battery. This is a much older technology, but it still works well today. These electric scooter batteries are very low cost, however, they take a long time to charge – up to eight hours. This may be an issue if you only have one battery and you need to use your scooter. In addition to the long charge time, they are quite heavy and cumbersome.

Another option is the Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery. It is a much lighter battery than the SLA and can last up to 600 recharges. The main draw backs to this variety of battery is that it can have a “memory”, in other words, it will only charge back up to a certain point if you do not completely drain the battery before charging it. They also have a reputation of not performing very well in cold weather (although you probably won’t be doing much scooter riding in the very cold winter anyway).

Newer developments in batteries have brought a couple more choices onto the market. The lithium ion (Li-ion) battery is used in many applications, including laptops, cell phones and PDA’s. This variety of electric scooter batteries is super lightweight, simple to recharge in a household electrical outlet, and about half the size of the regular electric scooter batteries that come as standard equipment on an electric scooter. The other newer style battery is the Lithium Polymer (Li-Po) which is even lighter than a Li-ion battery. The only drawback to this type of battery is that it is very expensive. It is a great choice if you can afford to purchase it, though, because it will last the longest, charge quickly and hold that charge for a very long time.

It is obvious that the best choice in electric scooter batteries is one that is light, small and easy to recharge. It may cost a little more than a standard battery, but you need to think about convenience and your needs. It is advisable to purchase two batteries so that you can charge one of them while you use the other.

Nice site, are you using the new DLE plugin? Just wondering.

In any case, this is a great article. I’ve got an electric scooter, and a Nickel based dry battery, which is lightweight with some nice features… however I am always looking for other potential options, and sometimes good information can be hard to find.

I am looking for a scooter that I will drive on a daily basis about 100 miles round trip. I did some research and figured I would need a 150 cc at least. I went to the places here that sell them and some online scooterdepot, safewholesale and atvdeals those companies are at least 1/2 of what the local companies sell. The dealers up here said that they don’t sell quality scooters. So I need to know if anybody can give me any advice?
